A note about the Hebrew translation/interpretation
Jewish scholar Rabbi Gershon Winkler uses his gifts to provide a fresh, sometimes surprising translation of the ancient text. He has remained loyal to the ancient Hebrew while also incorporating his deep understanding of the overall flavor and meaning of the root words as well as scriptural theology.

Standard translation = "Who visits the sins of the parents upon their children" (Exodus 34:6-7; Numbers 14:18)
The root Hebrew word (powked) has been translated into English as "visits." Rabbi Winkler translates this word as "who redeems."

"Who redeems the sins of the parents that fall upon their children" as in saving the children from the curse of their parents' mistake as opposed to smiting them with that curse.
This refreshing and surprising rendition of the word powked also fits within the context of the text in which it appears, which speaks of G-d's "compassion and benevolence and patience and bearing everyone's wrongdoing."

A note about the illustrations

The visionary illustrations in the New Millennium Bible provide images which illuminate, strengthen and provide striking insight to the scriptural text.  Carol Sakai's illustrations reinforce the storyline and provide creative nonverbal interpretations that give an unusual perspective to the text. 

For Example:
In the Garden of Eden story,after Adam* and Eve* have eaten of the apple, they are depicted as bursting forth from (being born from) the apple.  They now enter into the world of opposites (dualism) - life and death, joy and sorrow. This composition emphasizes the concept that the act of eating the apple propels them into a new and deeper level of awareness of the duality in life.  This illustration echoes and reinforces the concept of dualism which Rabbi Winker introduces in his translation, "where once they were aware only of what they had, now they became aware of what they lacked."
